What are some winter bass fishing tips (shore fishing)?
I like to fish on shores and piers (not a fan on the boat). Is that okay in the winter time? I know for a fact that winter bass fishing means fishing deeper waters and slower retrieves. From the shore the lake has many logs and lily pads which I know are excellent structures for bass during the summer and spring time. Is there bass on these structures during the winter (lily pads dies out)? Or do all the fish go deeper waters? Temperatures here get to around low 40s in a low pressure system and low 20s in a high pressure system during the winter.
you may still find a few in the wood. they are likely to be right up next to the tree. drop a jig, worm or spinnerbait right on top of them.
but you may just find yourself borrowing or renting a boat.
l fish socal lakes. l am also a shorebound angler. we are finding our bass at 50 foot depths right now. a good time for spoons and jigs. not many spots we can reach from the shore.
except when they stock the trout. then we have a good surface bite on big swimbaits for a day or two.
but… and this is very important…
ALL of the bass are not deep. there are always some that remain shallow, just as there are always some deeper fish when it seems that all of them are in just a few feet of water.
the best thing is to slow your bait WAAY down. crayfish imitations work in winter when bass crave the high fat content of these critters. near any springs or creeks entering the lake you should find shallower bass hunting craws. any off color or dingy water will be a place to check. concentrate on south facing shorelines. they get the most available sun and heat.
we sometimes have thick mats of dead grass in the backs of coves that have washed up from the main lake body or just grew there and died. as this stuff dies and deteriorates, it too generates heat. you may yet find bass in these spots. but sometimes not. as the stuff rots, it also depletes the available oxygen in the water. all l can say is to check each one with a surface weedless frog or rat.

Early Spring Bass Fishing Tips
Bass fishing is a pastime that can be enjoyed at any time of year by the millions of bass fishing enthusiasts all over the world. As bass are ever present in lakes, pools, rivers and even the coastal regions off some countries, it is possible to fish all year round.
Obviously you have to tailor your style and technique to the bass area and the time of year, but if you can do that then there is no reason why you cannot experience good catch rates all year round.
However, you need to know what techniques to use at the various times of the year and the early spring phase is as good a time to start with as any.
There are definite fishing techniques and methods that should be applied to early spring fishing because it is in the pre-spawn phase. As such, the bass are often at their most active but also their most stresses. This can send your catch rate either way. It can actually be extremely frustrating because you are not guaranteed to have huge hauls.
Instead, you actually have to work for it. If you do though, you will find that the bass are at their largest and most impressive.
The one thing you should remember when fishing for bass in the early spring is that you do have to be prepared to try out several techniques from day to day because there is no uniform behaviour that bass conform to at this time of year. As such, you do have to be patient and extremely versatile in your fishing technique. It is not a trip for those that are stuck in their ways.
The first tip that you should take on board is to fish to the weather. If it is warm and the sun is shining then the fishing should be fast. However, if it is a cold day then they will return to their winter behaviour of settling deep in the body of water as well as under the cover of vegetation and in rocky banks.
Tasting the water temperature will help you to tailor your techniques to the day because bass are cold blooded. Their blood will cool or rise to match the water temperature and this determines whether they are active or extremely sluggish from day to day.
It is also important to remember that the temperatures will rise and drop throughout the day so it is important to be extremely aware of your surroundings and the weather conditions throughout your bass fishing sessions.
The golden rule of bass fishing in early spring is to match the temperatures of the water. If the water is warm then you should fish quickly to encourage the bass to bite.
Casting your line in the same place twice is essential but moving it within ten or fifteen minutes is always a good idea if you have yet to catch anything by that point.
Fishing in the top water is also a great tip if the action is good. However, if the weather is cold then fish deep and be sure to settle your line in one place for a while.

What type of fishing (non-ice) do you do this time of year?
Well, I just wondered HOW to fish this time of year, because I’ve heard that fishing can be very good this time of year. I live in southern Il, It is cloudy and is about 36 degrees there is no ice on the pond. I’m fishing at a farm pond, so their is like your usual fish: Channel Cats, LM Bass, Sunfish, Bluegill, Crappie, etc.
Any suggestions or winter fishing stories appriciated!
But please no Ice Fishing tips, because I want to go, but I’m sadly not allowed.
I haven’t went in a month, so I’ve just been buying lots of gear and even a DVD about fishing. I feel like a drug addict that hasn’t had any crack in a year! The last trip I went, and a few other trips before that, I burnt the crappie (and the occasional green sunfish, small bass, or bluegill) up with grubs and tubes rigged on jig-heads. I’d just cast and retrieve the grubs close enough to the surface for me to see them, and I bounced the tubes off the bottom.
I actually watched an eleven-inch crappie hit and miss my tube, then come back and NAIL IT.
